Excerpt 3
“Billie, I told you this story for a reason. I want you to understand that you’re not alone. Everyone experiences something that touches him or her in a deep and profound way. That year in New York was the most difficult time of my life, but I managed to survive. You will, too. It won’t be easy, but a lot of people love you and are here for you. You just need to reach out and ask them for support. You will find your way, Billie. I know it!”
I sit up, turn towards Aunt Beth and hug her. I bury my face in her chest and rest there for a few minutes. I feel safe in her arms. I don’t want to pull away—ever!
But Aunt Beth interrupts my thoughts by changing the subject. “I hear we’re going to be spending more time together getting you on track with your math class. No more C’s for you, young lady! Let’s start after the weekend. How does that sound?”
“Great, Aunt Beth,” I answer. “NOT!” We giggle together. “I’m really glad Mom asked you to talk with me tonight. I feel so much better. It helps to know other people have confusing stuff happen to them, too.”
I look up at Aunt Beth with more hope than I had before her visit. “So, do you really think it’s going to be okay?” I ask.
“Yes, Billie. You just have to trust all the love and goodness that’s inside you. It’ll help get you through the changes that are coming your way.
